SURVEYING TRAINING - ILLINOIS
ABC is the world leader in apprenticeship and craft training in the merit shop construction industry.
What Surveyors Do
Surveyors measure and map the earth’s surface to determine precise boundaries for land, water, and air spaces.
Their work is needed to lay out streets, shopping centers, housing developments, factories, office buildings, and recreation areas. They also research legal records, analyze the data they find, and then communicate their findings. Surveyors use a variety of tools, technical instruments, and computer software. In addition to taking measurements, they make sketches, plot maps, do photography, and write reports. All 50 states license land surveyors; licensure requires passing at least one written examination.
How Much Can I Earn?
As an entry level surveyor, you can start at a salary of $22,000 per year. As you learn and increase your skill set, you can advance to a median salary of $39,000. A skilled and experienced surveyor can make upwards of $67,000 a year!
What Can I Expect from a Career in Surveying?
Surveying is generally a cooperative field, so good interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team are needed. No day or project is ever the same. It can be physically challenging – there is standing, walking, and carrying of equipment and instruments involved. Eyesight and hearing are important. It is also mentally challenging – good math skills, as well as the ability to visualize objects, distances, sizes, and abstract forms are critical. Good office skills are also essential. Someone who is observant and has attention to detail is a good candidate. Surveyors work both outdoors and indoors to do the various parts of their job.
